Of all the token ring chipsets in use today, about 80% of the non-IBM boards are using some form of the TMS380.

TMS380 devices can be categorized into two generations:

• First Generation
  • Token Ring only.
  • 4 megabits per second only.
  • 44k onboard memory.
  • 24 bit system address space.
  • 5-chip set.
    • TMS38030 System Interface chip.
    • TMS38010 Communications Processor chip.
    • TMS38020/21 Protocol Handler Chip.
    • TMS38051 and TMS38052 Ring interface pair.
• Second Generation
  • Token Ring and (later) ethernet.
  • 4/16 megabits per second.
  • 2 megabytes max onboard memory.
  • 32 bit system address space.
  • 2 (or later 1) chip set.
    • TMS38054 Ring Interface Device.
    • TMS380c16 Token Ring commprocessor.
    • TMS380c25 Token Ring commprocessor.
    • TMS380c26 Token Ring and Ethernet commprocessor.
    • TMS380c27 Ethernet commprocessor.
    • TMS380c30 Token Ring commprocessor and physical layer interface.
