590) --- Soundtrack, Explanations, and Glossary ----------------------- And now, the soundtrack for Serendipity 2, The Semester Of Our Discontent: Working Man : RUSH Under Pressure : Queen Dreamline : RUSH Don't Shoot Shotgun : Def Leppard Bad To The Bone : George Thorogood Headlong : Queen Changes : YES Hammer To Fall : Queen Sledgehammer : Peter Gabriel One Year Of Love : Queen Explosion : Project A-ko Soundtrack Force Ten : RUSH Instruments Of Destruction : Sector General Running Down A Dream : Tom Petty This soundtrack, coupled with the soundtrack for Serendipity 1, should make a pretty good mix tape, but I leave it up to you to put it together. :) And now, some explanations: You may be wondering why it took so LONG for me to get Serendipity Two (S2) out onto the net; after all, it's been over a year since S1 was posted, back in March 1994. Well, the answer to that is simple: Life. A combination of procrastination, academic life, and writer's block made it hard for me to progress steadily on S2; it came more in fits and starts than a solid flow of text. Also, there were some continuity and reality problems with the original concept that needed to be addressed, which necessitated the almost -total- rewrite of the second half of the story. Ok, so my minor IRC addiction cut into my writing time as well... but at least during the school year I could have several windows up... ^_^; -HOPEFULLY- Serendipity 3 will take less time to write than S2 did; I now have the entire thing 'loaded', as it were, and it should hopefully move a lot faster. But don't hold your breath. You may be also wondering why two characters I used in S1, Daniel Dukke and Ferdinand Fox, didn't appear in S2 (and why Fred had his 'accident'). Well, the person I'd borrowed them from, John Staton, is a comic artist. Deeds and Ferdy (and Fred, may he rest in pieces) are -his- characters, characters whom he's trying to get published in the actual comics world. Although he had given permission at the time of S1 for me to use them, by the time I was writing S2 he realized that having a copy of DD and FF on the net could hurt his chances of being published in the real comics market. Seeing as they weren't my characters to begin with, and since he asked me to remove them from S2, I did so. He -did- let me keep Ray for the rest of S2, though, because I had already set him up as the villain. He did, however, also ask me to kill him off, which, as chapter 60 attests, Aeri did. :) (And, despite what it may look like, Ray Rabbit -IS- really dead. No joke. Anyone with a head wound like that is out for the count. :) But, as a happy note, John -is- getting published, although not with the Dukke and the Fox just yet. Antarctic Press is going to be coming out with the one shot "College Park: DMV" in September, so reserve your copies now! :) And finally, if you've just read through this, and are wondering where chapters 1-30 are, they're in Serendipity One, which is available from the anime fanfic archives on ftp.std.com, or from my homepage, http://www.wam.umd.edu/~pmoyer/Welcome.html . While you're there, you can also check out the other fanfic series mentioned in this story (Undocumented Features, and Otaku Rising). And now, the Glossary: Audrey II: the big, man-eating plant from _Little Shop Of Horrors_. "Break a limb, tear a claw, die well": The -Klingon- version of the old theater saying, "Break a Leg". Obviously, the Klingons want you to -really- succeed. :) The Snowstorm of January '94: This actually happened, burying the campus in ice and snow, making it impossible to really get anywhere on campus, as well as shutting down classes. As you can imagine, missing a full week of school -really- screwed everyone over further down the line. The Hoff Theater: The student union's student-run movie theater. Nice place, and they sometimes show movies for free. :) SUEP: Student Undergraduate Employment Program -- run by the engineering department, to help their students get summer and permanent jobs. MX-CIF quadtree: You -don't- want to know what this. Trust me, you *DON'T*! UPS Truck: Obscure _Otaku Rising_ ref. Check ftp.std.com for more details. :) Fred: Fred the Superroach (one of John Staton's creations) -was- going to appear in S2, but he had a little 'accident' involving Roseanne reruns.... Quadtree: You -still- want to know about this? *sigh* A quadtree is a method of storing rectangular sets so that you can search for specific rectangles, determine if a point is within any rectangles, determine if any more rectangles can be inserted without overlapping, etc. That's not bad in and of itself, but there's about 10-20 ways to write a quadtree (MX-CIF being one of them). And writing it in -Pascal- only adds to the grief involved. Tenchi Muyo (Ryo-oh-ki!): A -really- popular anime series both in Japan and the US, one of the main characters is a Demon/Space Pirate/ Genetic Creation/Ultimate Car Battery named Ryouko, who has a tendency to fly around, teleport, and fire energy blasts. Very recommended by the author. Miya! __/^_^\__ This Is Greenwood (Koko wa Greenwood): The weirdest dorm in existence can be watched in this 6-part OVA series. Akagiyama-23 Battle 'Armor': B-ko's Battle Armor from the latter part of "Project A-ko". Rufus's Flightpack Prototype: The Rocketeer's Cirrus X-9 flightpack was disguised as an art-deco lamp for a part of the film. LEGO: From the danish phrase "leg godt" (play well). Also means "I Put Together," or "I Assemble," in Latin. This name, invented by Ole Kirk Christiansen, was first used to refer to the toy company he founded, and then later used to refer to the "automatic binding bricks" his company invented in 1949. The LEGO brick reached it's current recognizable state in 1958, and since then it has remained mostly unchanged, practically conquering the world's toy markets ever since, capable of lasting through fad after fad without losing it's popularity. And it has grown, adding new lines and new types of pieces without losing the ability to connect with it's ancestors. In essance, the LEGO system has grown much like a LEGO construct: from all directions, with every color, size, and shape known to man, and with only a child's or grownup's imagination the true limit of the heights that it can attain. Truly, the LEGO system is the superior form of toy. :) Ouroboros: The snake that encircled the Earth, it's tail in it's mouth, from Nordic Myth. Robocop: "The Future Of Law Enforcement" (Gordo just actually borrowed the armor, he didn't have his body cybernetically replaced) Malkavians: vampires who've been left behind by reality. *shiver* WPI: Aka, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the site of the events of Undocumented Features One, and also, near the current home of two of the original three authors, Gryphon, MegaZone, and ReRob. Suburban-From-Heck: This '88 Chevy Suburban exists, although it isn't called the "Suburban-From-Heck", nor does it have the modifications stated in the story (more's the pity). Worcester, Mass. got nuked twice in UF: Once at the end of UF1, and again near the beginning of UF3. The Wedge: The Wedge exists, though the author's never been privileged (?) to see it in person (I've got a pic or two of it, though). Interior descriptions of it courtesy of ReRob. Dew: Short for "Mountain Dew", the beverage of the gods. :) DAKA: better left buried. :) Boffa Combat: Dueling with daggers made of Pipe-insulation foam, PVC pipes for handles, and duct tape to hold it together. Remember, lightest touch counts! Gordo's Jetpack and weapons gauntlet: Derived from "Robocop 3". Mackie Stingray: Sylvia Stingray's younger brother, an unrepentant hentai. SSSIVA: Single Squad Support Infantry Volleying Arms. The battle 'suits' Kei and Yuri used at the end of "Dirty Pair: Project Eden" (modified here to latch on top of CVR-3F personal body armor). Also, the long, black cannon Aeri's wearing on her left arm is Megatron's. ^_^; Wozniak!: One of the original two creators of the Apple IIe. BC: Short for Bloody Card (from the Dirty Pair). Paladin: One of Trevor's various modes of being. The "Terrapin Corps": So named because the mascot of the University of Maryland, College Park is a Diamondback Terrapin. JHC Superlizard: A african frilled lizard, irradiated by an illegal nuclear test detonation, granting him sentience, spandex, strength, and a bad attitude. Fred's replacement. Dodge Daytona: Zoner's Car. Do -not- mess with it! (Trevor and Rufus got lucky.) Project A-ko: A really cool anime, featuring super-strong A-ko, super- smart B-ko, and the mutual object of their friendships, super- cute C-ko. This anime is known for it's running battles between A-ko and B-ko, the progress of which can be determined from a distance. Sabb 900 Turbo: Speedbump. Billund, Denmark: The location of the headquarters and main factory of the LEGO corporation. Also the site of the world's only LEGO theme park. The LEGO Armor: Developed by Rufus, the LEGO (Localized Enhanced Geometric Offensive) Armor consists of millions upon-millions of nanomachine- enhanced LEGOs, each one in essence an independently controlled machine, all under the central guidance of the Golden LEGO, which is the sole source of the nanomachine which transform ordinary LEGOs into cybernetically enhanced ones. These enhanced LEGOs, when linked together, increase their maneuverability and processing power. In a way, they could be considered borged LEGOs, but instead of a communal intelligence, they are controlled by the thoughts of the user. This way, the number of forms the Armor can form are limited only by the user's imagination. In the story, the LEGO Armor formed: Federation Runabout-Class shuttle (from ST:TNG) Griffin battlemech (from Battletech) Astrotrain (from Transformers) Blitzwing (again, from Transformers) G2 Megatron (once more, from Transformers) Optimus Prime (guess :) a large log (-not- from Transformers) Devastator (yes, from Transformers) Sea Lord (from KO Century Beast Rangers) Gizmoduck (from DuckTales) klunkWHANG!: The sound a railgun makes when it fires. Iago: Jafar's parrot, from the movie/tv series Alladin, voiced by Gilbert Gottfreid. LISP: `Lots of Irritating Superfluous Parentheses' No print quotas in AVWilliams: This is no longer true. :P Victor: The UMD library system's online catalog. Busch Gardens: A European-themed Theme Park near Williamsburg, Va. Godai: The constantly befuddled and put-upon college student from Maison Ikkoku. Evil Kneivel: A famous stunt artist from the 70's and 80's. Urd: The second of the three goddesses in Ah! My Goddess!, she is the goddess of the past, as well as the oldest, tallest, and sexiest of the three. Spags: This place has everything, provided you take the time to look for it. However, I cannot confirm this, since in real life I've never been up to Worcester. Binky the Clown and the Clothman Diamond: Two repeating gags in the Garfield cartoon. Connection Machine 4, Onyx^2 Reality Engine: Two -very- high-end computer systems. The CM4 is a parallel processing machine, and the O^2 reality engine is capable of doing realtime photorealistic rendering. Zaphod Beeblebrox: The two-headed, three-armed, former galactic president and all around rogue from "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy". Microcode and Microprogramming: Two totally useless computer science topics, according to this author. Route One: The "Central Strip" of College Park, which has various restaurants, shops, and bars along it. Magic: The Gathering: A card game. Also known as Magic: The Addiction or Five-color crack. This game, by itself is not expensive but as people get hooked on it they but more and more cards, _making_ it expensive. MBHS: Montgomery Blair High School. "Fahrvergnugen" on Gordo's volume control: Named after Lord Wolfgang Amadeus Fahrvergnugen (from UF), who is capable of giving the graduating address to the WDF Academy graduating class without use of a PA system. "Fox One", "Fox Two", etc.: Air Force parlance for the type of weapon being fired. Fox One is guns, Fox Two is heatseeker, Fox Three is for active radar, and so on. "Fox 11" doesn't exist. :) "Squawking": Another Air Force term, indicating what the enemy's IFF transponders are broadcasting as. In this case, FOWL's transponders were broadcasting something totally alien, so they were classified as "Other". "Mechaman's odd and sundry Fiction Definitions": contact Mechaman at jrrst16+@pitt.edu for more details. "Grand Arising": A old plan of Shredder's, from the TMNT cartoon show. Man-Kzin Wars: A series of anthology books from Del-Rey, featuring the battles between humankind and the bipedal felinoid Kzin. The Felizian power armor is based on the cover painting for book 2 of the series. Archives Two: The National Archives annex, located north of UMD-CP. Kei and Yuri: The Dirty Pai-- err, -Lovely Angels-. (You can put the bazooka down now, Kei... ^_^; ) The "Super Angel" Cyclone: A modified Lite Cyclone, with CADS blades instead of the usual forearm guards, and the EP-Infinity/2 cannon, which looks lot like a miniature of Galvatron's gun. KO Century Beast Rangers: A very silly anime, featuring probably one of the sillier combining mecha's I've seen in a while. GICU-2: Gyro Gearloose's first attempt at a security robot for Scrooge McDuck, it worked -too- well, seeing as it also prevented Mr. McDuck from entering his money bin. (from DuckTales) Gizmoduck: Gyro's second attempt at a security system, this time requiring a human (or duck) operator. Cobra Assault Cannon: Grade-A, State-of-the-art, Military Bang-Bang! (from Robocop) Ray Rabbit: The creation of comic artist John Staton, this rabbit was created to be the -perfect- nemesis for Daniel Dukke, cooler than him in every way. However, this meant Ray -dressed- better than Deeds, to which Deeds took offense and shot him. This essentially meant that Ray only existed in the comic for 3 daily strips. I felt that Ray deserved a second chance, and that's why I (with John's permission) brought him back in Serendipity. However, judging from the head wound he got in S2, he isn't coming back anytime soon. Jackson Pollock: An abstract painter, who did his painting by spattering canvasses with paint. "Becketting": To react in the manner of Sam Beckett, of Quantum Leap. Edison Bell: A member of the Detian Race, who's capable of travelling between dimensions. From UF. This story was begun in mid-March, 1994, and completed mid-July, 1995, on whatever text editors we could get a hold of, usually either vi or Edit. It is the product of academic stress, too much coke and dew, angst, time pressures, polarizations, sensations, criticisms, civilizations, compensations, animations (both american and japanese), complications, elevations, and, above all else, love.
