Coastcon 1995 Report

This year I attended Coastcon for the first time in Biloxi, MS. It was a 3-day con. They have a special deal that if you volunteer to work at the con (12 hours) you get into the con for $10 and have crash space. It is the same deal if you volunteer to run a game at the con. This was DEFINITELY a gaming convention. There were over 50 games being played, including Magic, JyHad, AD&D, and miniature gaming. They did exaggerate the number of dealers at the con: although there were at least 30 dealers, it wasn't over 100 delaers. There was also a small showing in the art exhibit.

New at this con: This is the first non-smoking con I have been to. The convention had just put in new carpet, so "by order of the fire marshall," there was no smoking allowed in the carpeted areas. That included the registration area, gaming area, dealers room, video room, and exhibit areas. A special room was set up (hospitality suite) were smoking was allowed.

Also at this convention: AIDS Awareness. There was a display for Aids Awareness that included the proper methods for protection.

The guest each had their own panel discussion were people could ask questions, etc. George Alec Effinger couldn't make it that weekend, but the other guests were definitely there.

Suggestions that I would make to the con:

(1) Have volunteers preregister. That way times can be assigned in advance.
(2) Have the speakers scheduled each day of the con, or at least in the afternoon.
(3) Have a scheduled autograph session at the con with each of the authors.

Now that CC is over, Let me put forth a general opinion question: Did this year suck a little more than usual? It seemed very slow, with fewer people.

I don't want to start a mass of debate, but I think that it may be due to the large number of Magic and Vampire people this year. I got the impression that many of the people who used to be into conventional gaming were sucked away by MTG and VTM. Does anyone have any opinions?

Me.

-Frost Note: Wizard came to CCon to give the Magic tournament. The
-guys from DOOM and Vampire did the same. Maybe offering some other
-organizations to come down and host their tournaments would give more
-games to play instead of relying on local GMs to host the tournaments.

I was bored to tears this year... the dance had little music i felt was dancable to. I noticed that fewer people showed this year. Must be a total lack of publicity...

well this was actually my first coast con....but I attened with a friend of mine who has attened for many years. She commented on the fact that it wasn't as much as usual. We thought that it might have just been the fact that neither one of us plays Majic or Vampire.

Count was down some (claim was 1600 this year as opposed to 1800 year before). One big difference was that CC had more of the Convention Center. In teh past we have always shared it with the Cat Show or the fodd tasting thingy. The lack of a saturday concert and other weekend activities definitely made the parking lot look emptier.

I do think the risin cost of hotel rooms and the inability to make last minute reservations limited attendance.

I have been to 16 of the 18 CoastCons, and this recent one was disappointing. I knew we were in for a slow weekend when I saw all the blank spaces in the schedule ! Does anyone know what the "incident" was in the Agent Orange video room that shut it down ? I think the dismal weather Friday morning and the basketball championship were factors in the low attendance. But there was a lot I did like this year - the costume contest ran more smoothly then years past, the art show was too small but also well run, there was no shortage of game space, and I picked up several bargains at the charity auction. My favorite spots in the dealer's room were CeCe's comics (each book bagged, with board, for $1.00) and the guy with vinyl Godzilla heads and large resin kits. The General membership meeting was frustrating; who wanted lifetime memberships to be an elected position ? Most cons just sell them for $200-$300, then you have a badge waiting for you every year forever ! Granted, that's a lot of money but it shows how much faith you have in the convention's future. I bought a membership for CoastCon 19 because I know Frank Schiavo will be a terrific chairman and correct this year's problems.

I have the progress report for NASFIC/DragonCon/Atlanta Comics Expo if anyone needs information.

Hi DJ, I was at the Committee Meeting on Sunday at HUBCONIII, and so far thay are still in debates as to which guests to have, Thay are still desiring a "media guest" and I personally think thay should continue with this desire. But so far the confirmed list hasn't been completed yet. As for the Holiday Inn EXPRESS, thay NEVER did like us. I've worked security for the Con now 4 years straight, and every time we use that hotel thay dick us over. Changing agreements with the Convention as to 24 hour gaming, and hosp. suite, and concerning video rooms too. Even though the change has been made to move the host hotel to Broadwater Towers (voted and passed) we will have better service from them (thay WANT our business) and will be providing 4 large buildings for con events, video rooms, 24hr gaming, hosp. suite, hotel dance... Rooms are $75 a night (up to 4 people) and none of this (*2 night minimum*) crap that Holiday Inn Express pulled at CCon18. Hey if whale is allowing you PPP access now, check out the Coast Con unoffical WebPage,http://www.datasync.com/~nexus/conpage.html

I got the news letter and saw the bit about guest suggestions.

Why not 'Forever Knight' or 'Xena' or 'Hercules.' There is also the people who do the voices for Animaniacs characters ! And whats the word on Adrian Paul ? If we want a media guest, lets go for some that are recently popular !

I thought there were plenty of guest possibilties... why do we have just one confirmed guest ? From statements on alt.fandom.cons over the last two years, there are apparently resources/files out there that give informtion on how to contact authors and artists. Has anyone thought to contact the local chapter of any writer groups/associations ?

Personally, I would rather not have such guests at CoastCon.. I think such fans would then overrun the rest of the congoers and make for a poor atmosphere. I just wish there was decent gaming going on.

I have a question about coast con..........

Why is it that it seems every year they get more strict witha bunch of little anoying rules.... and just plain "Oh your not fun anymore" attitudes...

I mean, when they are so concerned about whether or not someone's badge is on their upper left chest area or not seems kinda like someone really has TOOmuch free time on their hands... I mean they really seem to makeit a lot less enjoyable with all their little pre-de-militarized zone attitudes....????

Dear Coast Conners;

I would like to remind everyone that the Archive albums are open submissions by any member. If you have a photograph from a past CoastCon that you would like to share, bring a copy by the Art Show table at the convention and it will be placed in the archive. You might want to write the date it was taken on the back so the archivist will know which album it goes into.

Welcome to Fandom. Where there are no stakes, but plenty of ego.

I wear my badge where it is readily visible. Somewhere on my front of my body/clothing.

They don't cop an attitude with me... I'm not tolerant of dweebs... :-)

One year I wore badges from all of the years I had been to CoastCon... some of the security volunteers had fits... I told them to grow up !

Whats really funny about such people is that I have been a fan of science fiction before any of them were born !

In other words: Never Underestimate the Power of Human Stupidity ! RAH.

Just a note. to all members, future, present or past, the rules were established for a reason. I have been working security for Coastcon for many years now, also do it for a couple of other cons, and I have to defend all of these things I suppose, concerning the badge policy, the bylaws state that the badge must be worn at all times within the convention area, and must be visible from the front, thay perfer on your shirt in the front, where its most visible. I personally DO NOT CARE, as long as "I can see it" I am not going to question you about it. The only reason why thay made this policy is because people would try to HIDE their badge under clothing etc. When YOU the fan place the badge on your pants or hat or under a costume, exspect to get STOPPED every few minutes, all weekend long, because we will do it. But on the same key, we aren't going to harrass you if you're badge is in "PLAIN SIGHT" from the front. And I don't see ANY problems with wearing other badges from different cons, or past CCons along with this year's membership. To further back this up, ALL, and Io convention members, but I also find that some of the people complaining really are causing a problem to warrent attention by the security. We shouldn't have to keep telling someone to put their badge on where ihful eye for problems that arise, not to be police or to harrass, and we don't exspect any of this to happen this year. So I want all members to come with high spirits, exspect a good con, enjoy yourself, get to know one another and have FUN...

Talking about growing up! Maybe it's just that security wants to make sure that only people who have paid to get in to the con, get in. So the people who have paid, don't get upset that someone got in free. It's kind of tough to tell who is 'legal' if you can't find their badge, and if you have 20 people going through the door at one time, you need to be able to see the badges. Nobody has ever said "wear your badge on the upper left quadrant of your body"! When you have a con that has almost 2000 attendees, you have to take precautions. All the bigger cons do the same thing. All that is asked is to have the badge visible for the security people. Get a grip!

For Frosty and everyone else- (please forgive a dyslexic's spelling)

Ever thought of an easily computerized registration process using Netscape?

About the attached HTML file:

As you can see the buttons are linked (NAME="7a") and the type RADIO assures only one entry per hour (or per two hours or however you want to set it up), then Netscape (AKA MOZILLA) conviently tells you what the person entered/signed up for along with the time, so you can conviently(sp?) parse each registration entry into schedules for the people when they arrive... you could also have them register in the convention on a computer.

What does this mean for CCON?

This would be great for CCON as the shear volume of people comes in you could have 10-15 computers on-line in the colisium --closed or open net-- where people would come in(or HTTP in), type their name, address, phone number, emergency number, badge name --see our form from Wolf Con V-- number of days etc, and then send it.

After a central computer received it, it would either send it to a spesific printer or printer tray where color paper would be waiting.

Here's the hard part- Someone in programming (either C or PERL) would have to either wright a program to parse and hold the badge until an attendant took up the money and allowed it to print, or a program that would keep track of the badge numbers...

It would print out the perfect badge at the top of the correct colored form, along with a "Rules" page... The attendant takes their money, gets them to sign the rules page, then quick-cuts their badge from the rules list, stuffs the badge in a holder and staples it shut.

You could probably get a local computer store or IBM or Apple or both(Since Netscape knows no platform...) to lend computers to the cause [of CCON] (and to showcase their latest toys...)

(Feel free to add... I am sure I haven't thought of everything)

Drawbacks-

You need a programmer with a moderate knowledge of PERL or C to handle the parsing of the incoming data.

The need for computers and printers on the floor (which can be turned to computer tourney gaming later)(I would recomend putting the printers on roll-away carts for easability of shut down at night--if you shut down)

Advantages-

After the programmer has established the program to do the badges, the rest of the INFO can be placed in a Database, or at the very least, a Formatted ASCII text file. NO MORE trying to decipher "is this a W or an M in this address line???"

Fewer people need to tend registration.

Badges are easier to read.

Badge numbers are automatically kept up with.

People can pre-register with the system over the net and a credit card#(Secure server required).

Artists can buy space over the net.

Dealers can buy space over the net.

People can pre-register for games so everyone gets the chance to play in a tourney game (also good for initializing schedules, finding out how many GM/DMs are needed, where interests lie this year etc)

Gamers can automatically be signed in (in order) as alternates in certain games.

You could probably sell the idea and parsing programs to dragon con (maby for mailing lists, space, free memberships, special rates, etc)

Feel free to bounce ideas back into the frey and hit me upside the head if I am being silly... Though I think it is a good idea.

Thanks

Ron

PS- You *may* want to get an address assigned from the southern hub (ie CoastCon.com)

Well, I'm not pleased about the hotel selection for a couple of reasons. Though, I don't know what choices the committee had for choosing it.

  1. Tower versus open motel such as we had with Holiday Inn Express Security is a nightmare, Vandelizations by other guests can cause problems for the convention. Vandelizations by our people will reflect badly on us. Has happened in the past. It's more difficult with many floors to watch them all at the same time. Means more security people will be needed at the con. Please get calm individuals not the power hungry individuals that can easily be found, because they (power hungry) volunteer early for these positions.
  2. Other Hotels may be cheeper, due to the newly opened Casino highrises Hotels.
  3. I don't believe that we can sell out this new hotel, which will cause mundanes(ie non-convention people) to interact with our people. Can cause shutdown of the convention during evening activities at the hotel. Can cause complaints to hotel management, etc.

Advantages

If it rains, then we are TOTALLY indoors.

-Frost Note: I really like these notes at the bottom =:)

We need a hotel that can hold from 100-200 potential members w/ space for gaming/dances/etc. and want us. I know the Broadwater wanted us, at least. Comments ??

Date: 17-OCT-1995

From: MarkB64011@aol.com

In reference to the hotel concerns presented:

  1. The Holiday Inn Express REFUSED to allow us use of the hotel for the simple fact that they have 25 rooms booked for a bus tour the weekend of CoastCon. They would not allow CoastCon in the hotel unless CoastCon is the ONLY occupant.
  2. The Holiday Inn Express also would have insisted that we PURCHASE the entire hotel. This move proved to be costly last year.
  3. The facility we will be using at the Broadwater is called 'Gulf Hall' and it is situated OUTSIDE the hotel itself (about 15-20 yards from the front door)
  4. We have made arrangements with the hotel for security problems.
  5. Hotels with convention/meeting space have NOT lowered their prices since the opening of casino-affiliated hotels (maybe another year or two). And the negotiated rate was found to be lower than any other contracts the hotel was currently negotiating.
  6. If we sell our room block, the meeting space is FREE! This is in contrast to the Holiday Inn Express who charged us for the meeting space even though we PAID for the ENTIRE hotel! A lose-lose situation.

In closing, I ask that CoastCon members give the hotel a chance. It will be different and maybe a bit of a problem, but I think you will be pleased with the outcome. Lastly, the current Committee is attempting to give CoastCon a 'facelift'.

We hope that the changes will make the convention better, more fun, and more profitable. After all, the 20th anniversary of CoastCon is coming in 1997.....shouldn't we have enough capital to make it a truly spectacular event?

Comments welcome........

Well for one the Holiday Inn Express did NOT want our convention, thay on-purpose booked some other group for that weekend and do not want us mixing with them. The Broadwater has its OWN full security force, so security provided by the hotel will be fully staffed "not a couple of Swetman guards" so between their security (I know most of them personally) and our CCon hotel security staff, we should be able to minimize the majority of criminal activity by convention guests. Also this hotel's only real drawback is the extra drive to and from the coliseum, other than that, the hotel's facilities are quite nice, and its the ONLY other hotel in Biloxi to offer convention space, and might I add more space than what the Express offered!!! In my view after sitting in on the staff meetings I think "thay" made the right choice to go with the Broadwater Towers. Thay should also have plenty of hotel rooms as well. Come to the meetings and get involved, intead of blindly state about what mistakes thay have or are making.

Jimmy,

I was involved for several years at an upper level, And also, I did state at the very front, That I didn't have all the information available. But I was involved(5-7 years ago) with the decision to go to different hotels so I am somewhat informed concerning the choices which really haven't changed in the last 5-7 years. So I may be blind concerning the new committee decision, but I remember the concerns from the Past committees when I was closely involved. And I wanted to make sure that people remembered the concerns of the past.

If you don't remember the past, you are bound to repeat it.

Also, it wasn't stated that we were going to be in the back section of that hotel until after someone reponded to my post. And I did know concerning the problems with the Holiday Inn, they haven't changed for the 7 years since I was involved. I interact with conventions that have nothing to do with Coastcon or it's cousins on a somewhat regular basis. Thus, I'm aware of the current convention concerns on the gulf coast.

Also, I'm aware of problems concerning the Hotel's security over the past three years, (Not last year, I didn't hear anything about last year). And I mean the security that the Hotel pays for, not our security teams.

Well, I and my sisters stay at Motel 6 and drive to the Coliseum. I know most folks don't have the choice but to walk, but it might make it easier to plan your weekend. Decide what events you will be going to on Saturday [ as an example], take what you need for that, then go back to the hotel if needed. The three of us find its much easier, and fewer trips, that method.

Now the Committee is looking into shuttle for the convention members who are staying at the hotel, but its not a firm thing yet. Someone else on here might know the EXACT milage, but I am figuring 2 miles, so walking wouldn't be too much fun...
